Get Involved!

There are many different ministrires at the Cathedral Parish in which you can become involved. Many different skills are needed in many different organizations. Below you will find some brief information about the ministires of the Cathedral Parish. Please consider sharing your time and talent in one of these worthy ministires.

LITURGICAL MINISTRIES

ALTAR GUILD: Needs a few good hands to help with laundering and ironing as well as basic cleanup and setup of the altar. There are special seasonal needs, like before Advent, before Christmas, before Lent, before Holy Week, before Pentecost, before August 28 (St. Augustine’s Day). Regular Church cleaning is done every Thursday after 7:00 am Mass. If interested contact Laura at lauralou770@yahoo.com

ALTAR SERVERS: Training available as needed. Children 10 years old to adults are welcome to become servers. They are scheduled ahead of time. Contact Carol at cgauronskas@gmail.com

EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION: You not only assist with distribution of communion at Mass, but have opportunities to take the Eucharist to the homebound and/or Hospital. A special training class is required. If you can receive the sacraments and are in good standing with the Church, then you can distribute the sacrament of Holy Communion. LECTORS (READERS): Important Ministry of proclaiming God's Word at Mass. For training and scheduling contact Ramona at ramona.victoragruso@gmail.com

NURSERY: Watching and playing with infants to 4 1/2 year olds during the 9:00 am and 11:00 am Mass. We have a beautifully stocked playroom with a television, videos and toys and parent beepers. Background screening and Protecting God’s Children required. Two volunteers required per Mass. Call Colleen Cheshire 829-8063

MUSIC MINISTRY: The Cathedral Music Ministry welcomes the participation of all singers and instrumentalists who wish to share their gifts with the parish community. Currently, we have the following opportunities for service: Three Primary Choral Ensembles: The 9:00 A.M. choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30.The 11:00 A.M. choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30. The 6:00 P.M. choir rehearses on Sunday afternoon at 4:30 P.M. Cantor Ministry: Leads the assembly at liturgies when a choir is not present. Instrumentalists: Brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion... all are encouraged to make a joyful noise! Please contact Dr. Bernie Sans 824-2806.

USHERS: Are there to offer adequate welcoming and assist people in being seated, so that we can take up the collection expeditiously, so that our many guests can be assisted at Communion time, and so that bulletins and other loose handout material can be given out expeditiously after Mass. SPIRITUAL/FAITH/ FRATERNAL ORGANIZATIONS

adorationADORATION: Prince of Peace Church Monday through Friday, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. Weekly - One hour long volunteer times are available. Put aside one hour per week for our Lord. Contact Susan Partel at kpartel@comcast.net


CROWN FINANCIAL MININSTRIES: A Biblical financial study (8 weeks) that teaches people how to be more financially and spiritually free to do the work of the Lord. For more information, please call Sue Brunson at 797-5039 or Vee Williams at 461-0643

kofcKNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS / AUXILIARY: A Catholic men’s spiritual and fraternal organization, which is of invaluable assistance to the parish and the apostolic works of the Diocese. First Florida Council #611 meets 1st Monday of each month at 7:00 pm. at the Bishop Baker Center. 4th degree will meet on the 4th Monday at Corpus Christi Church. LEGION OF MARY: Meets weekly for prayer, devotion and evangelization, performing social and outreach services. They meet Tuesdays at 10:00 am in the St. Benedicts Rectory. Dot Bell 824-4263

PRAYER NETWORK: This is a powerful ministry in our Parish. People phone/email in requests for prayer and the list is circulated by the internet. Assist by praying for the people on the list. Theresa Mitchell Sheppard: 824-2806 ext.307 or cathedralprayers@gmail.com

APOSTOLATE

HOME BOUND: An extension of Eucharistic Ministry, but even if you are not a Eucharistic Minister, help can be given here with organization (calling people to confirm visits or driving the priests) Follow up needs discovered during the visits. Please call the rectory if you know someone who needs a visit. Background Checks required. Patricia Danahy 824-2806.

HOSPITAL: Visitation is usually done by a Eucharistic Minister, but we can always use people to drive, follow-up and schedule. Background screening required. Sharon Ruditis 794-4288

NURSING HOMES: As with hospitals, these are primarily Eucharistic Ministers. But we can always use more to help with setup of Mass and visiting/assisting the men and women in the various nursing homes. Contact 824-2806

SCOUTING: Our Parish sponsors Cubs and Brownies for the younger ones, as well as Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. Even if you don’t have a child in any of the programs, you are very welcome to assist in projects and trips. Leigh and John Bradshaw: 829-1618. TEACHING/CATECHESIS

CFP -- CHRISTIAN FORMATION PROGRAM: This is our catechism program for our K-12 kids. Volunteer teachers work step-by-step to prepare youth. You can be a teacher’s aide, help supervise recreations, etc. D.R.E. 824-2806. Protecting God’s Children and Background Check Required.

RCIA: Be a sponsor for a catechumen preparing for baptism or for a baptized candidate for full communion with the Catholic Church. No Theology degree needed. Contact Dan Taylor 826-1070.

YOUTH, HIGH SCHOOL AND MIDDLE SCHOOL: The Cathedral Parish Youth Ministry has a variety of opportunities for young adults in middle school and high school to grow in the Faith. There are retreats, monthly meetings for prayer and study, and opportunities for charitable works. The easiest way to get involved is to participate in the weekly meetings called “NightLife”. Middle school NightLife meets two Fridays a month and high school meets every Sunday. NightLife always starts at 7pm and both groups meet at the Bosco House located at 10B Sebastian Ave. Contact the Youth Director at 824-2806 ext. 306

FINANCE COUNCIL: Committee that advises the Pastor regarding financial concerns. Chairman: Alexander Christine 829-0523

VOLUNTEERS

BELL TOWER GIFT SHOP: Volunteers currently work four hours (mornings or afternoon) once per week. The shop is open 7 days a week, whenever there are no Masses. BULLETIN STUFFERS: Help the Parish by stuffing inserts on Friday mornings at

CANDLE ANGELS: Help each week with changing out the candles.

CATHEDRAL TOURS: Right now we have three trained docents (you share info and get smarter with each tour) It would be lovely if we would have tours available 7 days a week, whenever there are no Masses. This job is as much evangelization as tour-guiding. People ask lots of Qs about A, “Why do Catholics do this?” or “What is that box on the altar?” (the tabernacle). Call Louise Kennedy: 794-532.

COFFEE & DONUT MINISTRY: Be one of the families that take one Sunday per quarter to set up and pass out donuts, coffee and juice. We have it down to a science. Contact Ms. Evelyn Ibarra at eibarra93@yahoo.com

HOSPITALITY and HOST/HOSTESS: Kitchen help, cooking, receptions, and hostess duties for various events at the rectory, church and Parish Hall. Laura Lynn: 824-2806

RECTORY VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers are needed to answer the phone, do various office chores and assist where needed. We always need volunteers. Call 824-2806

WELCOMING RECEPTION: Every quarter we host new-parishioner reception in the Verot Room at the Rectory. This is a great time for old and new parishioners to get to know one another as well as staff and priests. Jan Stevens: 824-2444 Come and recruit for your ministry.
COMMITEES

RESPECT LIFE COMMITTEE: Studies and prays for our Parish, then keeps our Parish and community informed about our Catholic Church’s unique and oftentimes challenging read of our Lord’s Gospel of Life. They meet the first Tuesday of the month at 6 pm in the Bracken Room. Leader is May Oliver; her email is mayoliv3@aol.com or phone 461-3028.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: This ministry helps parishioners know the Church’s social teaching and promote justice and peace in our community and in our country. Ron & Mary Zamora 501-1463.

STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE: Works directly with the Pastor to assist parishioners in the transition from “a giving to the Church” mentality to Stewardship as a way of life mentality. Contact Al Poticny, afpoticny@msn.com.
OTHER LOCAL MINISTRIES

catholiccharitiesCATHOLIC CHARITIES: 225 West King Street (next to Amar Beauty Store).They need volunteers for every kind of work: assistance with pantry, organize clothing, respite care, office work (so the social workers can do their work), etc. Work as much/little as you like, when you like. They need all the help they can get. Becky Stringer: 829-6300.

catholicdaughtersCATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA: Court 23 is primarily a spiritual society, tending carefully to our Catholic heritage. They take care of the older nuns, priests and maintain spiritual and moral values. They meet the 1st Thursday of each month at noon at CDA on King Street. Mary Baker: 829-2357.

DEAF AND BLIND MINISTRY: Provides religious education to the Deaf & Blind students at the Florida School on San Marco Ave. We always welcome volunteers in the office and classroom, and signers for the 9:00 a.m. Mass at the Cathedral. Our office is located at 30 Ocean Ave., in St. Augustine, directly across from the Shrine Gift Shop. We can be reached at 825-4272.
OTHER LOCAL MINISTRIES

ST. GERARD HOUSE: A ministry to pregnant women, married or single. Medical and educational benefits are provided. On campus accredited High School, residential licensed program and Licensed Day Care. Outreach to furnish pregnancy testing, counseling, food, baby clothes, sonograms, transportation, Lamaze classes, parent and couple counseling and adoption services are provided. Fund raising activities include a Fashion Show. Run for Life, Banquet/Dance and Golf Tournament. Please help with events, office work or donations. Currently raising $ for a building addition. ST. FRANCIS HOUSE, SOUP KITCHEN: Make sandwiches, serve meals, drive
and procure food from donors. Spend time listening to the guests and their many stories. 70 Washington Street, 829-8937

YOUTH, COLLEGE: Work with our already – in – place prayer and catechism oriented group, which meets twice a week. Assist in the founding of a Newman Club, with college-aged social activities, as well as prayer and learning about the Catholic faith. Frank Benischeck: Petros@exp.com.
